The beginning of the Subaru you know today

Here we have a 1979 Subaru DL wagon.  While this wasn’t the beginning for Subaru in the US, most people know them as the AWD company and/or the wagon company, although we know there’s a WRX generation growing up now.  This is where the 4WD and wago traditions started.

Brown wheels are full of win.

This particular example is finished in a beautiful shade of brown with brown interior and a manual trans (four-speed, we think).  Does it get any better?  The seller calls it a project, but it looks like it’s all there and there are no outward signs of it being a rustbucket (extremely rare for one of these).  The asking price may be a bit greedy, so we’ll see if the seller is realistic with offers.

$3,000 BIN with offers accepted
08/08/2013 update:  Seller lowered price to $2,800 and it ended, but we can’t tell whether it sold

4WD badging is a bonus item.  Remember, this car came out before the Eagle and essentially no other car had offered 4WD/AWD before (yes,we know about the Jensen FF…not exactly a volume car!).

Did we mention 4WD?  When you have only one USP, flaunt it.

Spare tire is kept warm – not only Yugos have that feature.
