Okay, this one’s personal: 1970 Mustang Hardtop

Your humble host’s first car was a 1970 Mustang Grande, which was the luxury Mustang from 1969 through 1973.  In 1970, that meant is had a landau roof (front half, oddly), some black ‘camera case’ vinyl exterior trim, the Deluxe (faux woodgrain) interior shared with from the Mach 1, extra sound deadening, a big clock and, most importantly, cloth seat inserts in a really cool houndstooth pattern that was unique to the ’70 Grande.  In my case, all of this was in blue, with the landau roof, trim and houndstooth in black.

So, I’m predisposed to liking 1970 Mustangs.  That’s what makes this abomination so terrible.  Style is a subjective thing, but this car is truly awful.

Clearly, someone spent a lot of money here.  The work actually appears to be of fairly high quality, it just resulted in something terrible.  The asking price reflects an attempt to recover mal-investment.  There may not be a 1970 Hardtop worth $45K, but, if there is, it would be a stock car in original condition or restored and would have a 428CJ and four-speed.

$45,000 (WTF!?)

Ugh…what can we say here?  Overdone graphics, overdone wheels, side pipes…does it get worse?

No, your eyes don’t deceive you and, yes, only 1969 Mustangs had the four-headlight front end.  Apparently the front clip was swapped over to a 1969.  Why?

No, 1970 Mustangs did not look this gaudy from the rear.  Someone decided to double the number of taillights rather than invest in a real Shelby conversion, which would have fit..  Why?

This doesn’t get any better on the inside.  In addition to the obligatory – and ugly – billet steering wheel, we have a studded leather look over what was a base interior.  At least it appears this may have been an original air conditioning car (note vents above center stack).

Yes, that’s some sort of saddle back thing over the area that housed a clock on Deluxe interior ‘Stangs.

While the engine itself wears typical tart-up parts that aren’t too bad, even the engine compartment is gaudy and overdone here.  Note the diamond plate that ties into the tastelessly-applied pieces on the dash.
