Nearly Ideal: 80s French Turbo Diesel Wagon

Someone donated this awesomely odd 1986 Peugeot 505 diesel wagon, probably because it doesn’t have a clutch pedal.  Could their tax write-off become your project?

This Peugeot 505S turbo diesel wagon has about 240K on the odometer, which means the engine is barely broken in, but the car around it might have some issues.  The seller, a major donated car liquidator, says this car runs and drives well; so that’s something.  It seems this car has suffered mostly from sun damage.  The paint is so oxidized, that you could probably wear a flat-bill hat in this car and pass it off as “matte paint.”  The interior, on the other hand, needs some help.

If this had a manual trans, it’d be the perfect 80s oddity.  With an automatic, it’s almost there and the bidding is staying low enough that this might make an interesting parts hauler for the right buyer, unless someone buys it planning to take on a swap.  Of course, a modern turbo diesel swap would be awesome, and a diesel might get past CA smog laws.

Iconic (to people who like unusual cars) front end is pure 80s Peugeot.  Surely, one or your teachers or professors drove one of these.

Wagons have just the right proportions, though the wheels look small by today’s standards.  If you buy this, please don’t change them unless they’re period correct!

Rear end shows 505S badge, but no diesel badge.  Is this the anti-sleeper?

Passenger side sheet metal looks straight to us.

There’s no pesky sunroof to leak.

Cockpit is all business in true euro style and doesn’t look as dated as domestics from this period.  It’s hard to tell, but we think we see dash cracks.

It’s French, so you get the obligatory Jaeger gauges.  Note boost gauge!

In a French car, you don’t get normal controls, but these aren’t too wacky.  Pull-out ashtray is awesome and probably had some professorial pipe smoke in it over the years.  Note the heated seats, too.

Upholstery hasn’t survived too well, so you’ll want to budget that in.  At least it’s neutral grey leather.

Even the rear is shot here.  Given the damage is along the seams and matte paint wasn’t available back then, this seems like sun damage.

There’s no shortage of cargo space here!
