1991 Bronco Centurion Four-Door

Esteemed editor DS once posted a Centurion Bronco four-door on these hallowed pages and I’m here to do it again.  Why?  Because these are an interesting part of oddimotive history and also show the adaptability of the aftermarket when an OEM refuses to invest to address part of the market.

These represent Centurion’s effort to use Ford products to compete with the Chevy/GMC Suburban – something Ford simply didn’t do.  It’s never been 100% clear to me how much F-250 Crew Cab is present vs. how much Bronco; but the end result is a heavier duty Bronco with four doors and three rows.

This truck has about 154K miles on it and the seller claims it runs well.  That’s low mileage for 23+ years of use.  Further, the powertrain should be good for more and rebuilds aren’t too complicated on a good ‘ol Ford 351.  Things to look for here are needs specifically related to unique Centurion parts.   Those will be hard to find, but should be limited to interior trim.

Dare to be different and haul your family with unusual style!

From this angle, you might think this was just a normal F-series with a camper shell.  Look closer and you’ll see four doors, long before the ‘civilian’, half-ton crew cab came out.

The rear cover is what marks this as a Bronco – and it’s removable, just like that on any unmodified Bronc.

Yes, it’s long.

Front interior is all Bronco and this one needs a little help.  It’s all there, though.

Middle row has captains’ chairs.

And, yes, there’s a third row.  This is what Ford lacked in their lineup at the time and this is the reason these vehicles did pretty well for conversions and considering they were VERY expensive at the time.  Remember, Chevy and GMC played in this space at the time with the Suburban.

This 5.8 was the biggest engine option available in a Bronco, but some of these 4-door conversions opted for the 460 V8 available in the heavy duty truck and some might have even had a turbo-diesel.
