Tons of fun: 1966 Mercury S-55

We’re big fans of the Ford Galaxie 7-Litre and we’re big fans of unusual and orphaned brands; so this Mercury S-55 is a slam dunk.  This is the Merc (everyone knows Merc means Mercury, not Mercedes) version of the Galaxie 7-Liter, which means a full-sized car with a Super-Marauder 428, console-mounted shifter and some cool trim and badges.  Though this is one big beast, that 428 undoubtedly moves it with authority.  Act now and you can have the only S-55 on your block!

The seller claims this one has a little over 6K original miles and it does appear to be in excellent condition.

$8,100 with two bids and reserve not met
09/02/2103 update:  SOLD for $17,000 with 12 bids.  We think that’s a lot of car for that money…

Semi-fastback styling is 60s cool and the ginormous trunk should hold many bodies.

Classic mid-60s Mercury front end is nice here in extra-wide size.

Gotta love this badge…

Interior looks to be in great shape.

Dash is 60s awesome and console shifter is a welcome  touch, although we’d love to see a four-speed car in this condition.

This is what the fuss is all about – the fantastic Ford 428, known as the Police Interceptor when properly equipped (we’re not sure what carb this one has) and known as the Super Marauder when in a Mercury.

This ultra rare 1966 Mercury S/55 is quite possibly the cleanest, lowest mileage and most well preserved S/55 on the planet. With only 6094 actual miles, the S/55 is best remembered as the ‘Gentleman’s Muscle Car’, and it is unlikely you have ever driven a car such as this. Powered by the special high performance Super Marauder 428 V/8, this car is a rocket, yet it retains all the comfort and ride of a mid ’60’s era luxury automobile. Original elderly owned southern car and pampered since day one. I am the second owner. Car has the original shiny paint and still sports the fine lined hand painted body pinstripe unique only to the S/55 models. Solid and straight rust free body. A few small paint chips but nothing at all objectionable. New radial tires just installed. (the red line bias ply spare looks to be original) Brakes, wheel cyl’s., brake hoses, replaced and wheel bearings greased less than 300 miles ago. Completely serviced, inspected and ready to drive anywhere. New battery and dual exhaust system as well. All the rubber items are soft and pliable with no signs of deterioration. The interior is spectacular. Bucket seats, ‘Multi-Drive Merc O Matic’ transmission with floor mounted console shifter. Carpet, door panels, headliner, padded dash and sill plates look absolutely brand new. No signs of wear or age problems. Engine starts instantly and sounds fantastic with a deep muscular tone at the exhaust pipes. Power h/d brakes, power steering and no a/c. Factory seat belts, remote mirror, courtesy lights, clock, and original floor mats. Car has a dealer installed radio reverberator with factory front and single rear speaker. Everything mechanical and electrical working just as it did 47 years ago. However the clock recently quit working. If you are looking for a rare piece of  unaltered history this is it. It is incredible just how well preserved this car is. Additionally, car comes with a service manual, owners guide, original window sticker and build sheet. Yeah, I'd love to have that one.

…although a four-speed car would be amazing. Don't people pay nearly 10K just for 428 engines?
