Nicest Micro-Subie?

We’ve featured Subaru 360s before, but not one in truly great shape.  This was the first car produced by Subaru/Fuji Heavy Industries and found its way to the US market with the help of none other than Malcolm Bricklin, later of Bricklin, Bertone X1/9 and Yugo fame, as well as at least one ill-fated attempt to bring in cars from China.

The 360 was the basis for several bodies/variants, including a wagon, convertible, truck and van, as well as some dune buggy-esque semi-customs featured at the beloved Lane Motor Museum. This is the ‘standard’ Coupe, but this Young S the ‘performance’ version.

The seller claims this one runs and it’s obvious is does indeed have new tires.  Risk factors here are locked-up brakes and the fact the he or she hasn’t driven it to verify the condition of other mechanical parts.  It appears this is in superb condition, however, so a someone willing to sort it should be able to make it a nice driver.

The question, then, is what is it worth with some unknowns and what’s the cost to, worst case, replace all the brakes, suspension and transaxle?  Despite big moves in microcar prices recently, these don’t command Isetta money (yet?), so I think the $7,500 asking price is a bit strong.  Maybe it’s close to a deal at $5,000?

Suicide doors are a nice touch on these.

Did these have black vents?  I’m not sure – could be a Young S think, or some owner’s idea.

Interior is microcar-classic and retro-cool!  The condition appears to be very good.

What, no engine??

Oh yeah, it’s back here…
