Build Your Own Tamiya Blackfoot Tribute

Why is an F150 on Oddimotive?  This truck is here because these stepsides are rarely seen, especially with manual transmissions.  Also, this truck represents a rare opportunity for an RC car fan to relive the 80s and build a full-scale Tamiya Blackfoot.

Supposedly, this truck has 95K miles.  Aside from a wacky steering wheel and period-correct custom wheels, this truck looks stock and it does appear to be in very good condition.  It’s not clear whether this truck has an inline six or a V8, but truck purists may appreciate the torquey 300 cubic inch I6, if present.

This isn’t a project price, so you’ll have to serious about your Blackfoot replica if you choose to go that route.  For anyone else, this could be a cool, unusual truck – just don’t expect full bed utility!

When did you last see this body style?

Front end is nothing special.  The 1986 grill isn’t exactly the same as the 1985 unit replicated on Tamiya’s model, but it could be excused (or swapped?).

The tailgate on these is fairly iconic, with large lettering crammed into its relatively narrow space, along with manual latches that looked twenty years old in 1986.

The interior appears to be in very good shape overall.  We would not have chosen this steering wheel, but that’s an easy fix.  Note clutch pedal and LONG, manual shifter.

This truck even has a tach!  The “unleaded fuel only” warning still meant something in the 80s, as leaded fuel was still available in some parts of the country.  Remember 85 MPH speedometers?  If this truck has the inline six, that may actually be optimistic…

Here’s the Tamiya Blackfoot, among the first RC monster trucks and likely the best-selling.  Notably, these trucks featured RWD, so the donor truck above is a good fit.
