Here we have the uber-rare and questionably desirable Mercury equivalent to the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, complete with 5-speed manual transmission. Yes, this was a factory configuration, at least for a few years. The turbo powertrain was phased out of the Mercury lineup after the 1986 model year, even though the 1987-1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupes received improvements and are most fondly remembered of the breed.
This example claims 16K original miles and looks the part. Although the ‘formal’ rear window on the Cougar hasn’t aged as well as the T-Bird profile, this color combination is good enough that this looks like a classy ride even today. Be the first and only on your block with turbo Cougar power!

09/29/2013 update: Ended unsold. It’s hard to price this bad-boy, but $8K is a lot of money for any 1985 T-Bird or Cougar. Naturally, this gets tempting to your humble host at just a slightly lower price.
Front end varies only slightly from the Thunderbird. Ten-hole wheels were shared with various T-Birds and Mustangs.
There’s that flat window.
This wears XR7 badges but, surprisingly for an 80s car, no turbo badging.
Analog guages are a nice touch on turbo models.
Yep…genuine stick shift.
And…there it is, unfortunately, not in 190HP 1987-88 T-Bird nor 200+ HP late Mustang SVO trim.
