The Other Super Coupe

Most enthusiasts are aware of the 1989-1995 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe and most know that it was a torque monster that, despite its relative large size, delivered impressive engine performance and handling.  What many don’t know is that Plymouth offered a Volare Super Coupe for 1978 – as if the Volare wasn’t super enough in the first place!

The Volare Super Coupe featured handling upgrades and a unique decal treatment, as shown on our feature car.  This one, however, appears to be missing its original matte black hood finish.  Aside from that hood color, this all came with Sable Tan Sunfire Metallic exterior paint and all came with the four-barrel-equipped 360, which was the most potent Chrysler engine available.  Horsepower was around 175, but torque was greater.  The seller claims this one has been rebuilt and upgraded closer to early 70s specs, which should yield lots more power and torque.  Sadly, it seems all 360-equipped Aspens and Volares came with automatic transmissions.

These two-door Volare/Aspens weren’t bad-looking cars at all, and the stripes on this one are perfect for a late 70s car.

Side louvers work on this car, as do the stock rally-type wheels and spoiler.  Two of those three give this away as a late 70s car, vs. earlier 70s.

Fancy decal treatment carries over to the rear.

Here’s the mean front end.

Interior is pretty sporty for 1978.  Too bad there’s no clutch pedal in here, but this is more of a muscular cruiser than a track car, anyway.

Here’s the 360V8.  The seller claims this was rebuilt with earlier parts to offset the late 70s smog nastiness.  Hopefully, one won’t have problems passing a smog test…

This is one of 494 Plymouth Volare Super Coupes built, and is a real A67 car. All of the correct parts are there: chin spoiler, blacked out grille and headlight bezels, wheel flares, 15×8 steel wheels, special gas cap. Front and rear HD anti-sway bars with poly bushings, new power brake booster and master cylinder, less than 3000 miles on numbers-matching rebuilt 360 (bored .030 over). 1970 X heads, 1971 Thermoquad replaced the lean burn setup. Higher compression pistons, RV cam, double roller timing chain, windage tray, orange ignition box, larger diameter custom single exhaust, 2.94 rear gears (not sure grip). 3 speed with OD tranny.
Interior has original-style vinyl seats, brand new carpet, Tuff wheel, UNCRACKED dash pad, UNCRACKED console pad, uncut door panels, upgraded CD player with 4 speakers. All steel rot was replaced with panels, car is solid inside and out. Title in hand, car is ready for a new home.
Over the course of its restoration the following were also replaced: all 4 brakes, all 4 shocks, control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, universal joints, with less than 3000 miles on all.

NOTE: I do have plenty more pics of this car, Ebay makes it difficult to add them, or to put in links to another site in the description. Just message me and I’ll forward you the links to two full albums of this car

Full disclosure: This is very solid and nice car. It has been painted a slightly different color than original, and does not have the flat black exterior paint (a personal decision but could easily be added). It is a carburetor car, so cold starts are always a treat, but again that is for the new owner to decide if they want to replace with new Edelbrock intake, carb etc., or drive as is. The enlarged single exhaust was added with an intended muscular tone. It is not a quiet car (again intentionally). Of course that as well can be changed by a new owner but just being up front about that. It may not be show-winning quality (yet) but it could be in the right hands. It has some dents, and will need tires (which is a personal preference kind of thing so I leave that to the new owner). You are bidding on a very rare and very nice 37 year old car, and there are very few of these left. Deposit of $500 due within 3 days of auction win. Good luck!
