Tasty Turbo Brick

This 1982 Volvo 242 GLT is one cool brick – GLT means Grande Luxe Touring and this was Volvo’s luxury/sport offering.  Some of these had the not-so-exciting PRV V6, but this one is equipped with a turbo four and manual trans.

The seller points out that the turbo likely needs a rebuild and there may be a transmission issue, but, at $1,500 or less, these can be addressed.  As a matter of fact, it would be tempting to up-size the turbo a bit and go with Megasquirt or other stand-alone EFI; but I believe these have Bosch K-Jet continuous fuel injection, which means such upgrades can take more work.  If the mileage is really only 140K, this Volvo engine is hardly broken in.

I’d never choose gold on a car, but this one is borderline tan and fits well with the idea of early 80s luxury/sport.  We’ll call it Stealth Gold.  Virgo wheels always look great on Bricks, though I think I see a flat tire.

Most of the front end says luxury, but the turbo badge hints at performance.

Rear turbo badge is a bit larger.  Finger not included?  Is the owner flipping off his or her car?

Interior looks pretty good overall.  Because these were built for damn near twenty years (more if you consider some 140 series parts carried over), parts cars aren’t too hard to find when reproduction or NOS parts can’t be found.

Someone might have lived in this car, but I’m not sure whether that’s good or bad.

Frankly, it’s a bit hard to tell what’s going on under here, but it seems it’s all there.

!982 Volvo 242 GLT, This is a rare car and something you never see on the streets. Registration is paid until 2015, the body is mostly straight with just a small dent on the right front fender and some peeling paint. The car has passed smog with flying colors and has a brand new cat. The engine has a turbo and an intercooler plus a manual transmission which makes it a hell of a lot of fun to drive. only 140 k on the motor, odometer stopped working at 120k but the last registration paper had it listed at 140. The interior is good with all of the gizmos working like power windows and locks.

Well on to the bad stuff now. The main problem is the turbo, it needs a rebuild pretty bad and I don’t have time to take care of it myself. So because of that the engine runs but with slowly get worse over time, like 3 days before you have to clean out the intake system of the junk the turbo is spitting into it. Ill have it cleaned out when you take it so it’ll run good. Other than that the stick is a little weird probably needs some work on it, but it does shift into all gears. Last thing the tires are pretty old in the pictures the cars has a flat in the driveway I’ll be replacing that tire but unfortunately your on your own for the rest.

So yeah she has problems but besides those it runs great and is tons of fun to drive I enjoyed it just don’t have time to fix her up anymore. So this is why I’m selling so cheap $1500 obo I wont go into the dirt on an offer so please don’t be an asshole, Thanks.
