Live the Brick Lifestyle

In automotive terms, “brick” refers to Volvo cars of the particularly square variety.  Most often, these references involve the long-lived 240 series, but many forget that the 140 was the original brick.  This 1969 model appears to be in great condition and is an excellent example of the breed.

This is an early 140 (the 2 in 142 means it’s a two-door), with the full grill with center ridge.  It has the desirable four-speed, though the seller doesn’t claim it has the optional overdrive.  Factory AC is also a nice touch.  As the seller notes, it looks like the front fenders and hood have been painted more recently than the rest.  Still, it looks good in pics and shows no signs of rust bubbles.  All we know mechanically is that it ‘runs and drives.’  That’s better than the alternative, but does not instill a lot o confidence.

In my humble opinion, these represent a lot of car for the money and I’ll bet one could get this for a bit less than the asking price.  If you find out it runs well and you buy it, the next question will be how much you should spend at IPD on suspension hop-up parts.

Yes, this car is very square.  Still, they have a certain classy look to them.  Just picture a professor’s tweed-jacket-with-elbow-patch-covered arm out the window on the way to work.  That’s how these cars were used.

Small, early taillights are nice, although the later 140 started a signature Volvo style that would last a long time.  All cars had the squiggly exhaust.

I dig the blue on blue and this interior seems to be in great shape.  These early cars had the horizontal speedometer and long shifter.  Around 1972, both changed.  Fortunately, all except loaded GL models with leather had tweed upholstery to match owners’ clothing.
