Joel Ewanick: When you go there, you are going to get fired

In a recent article in Wards Auto, Joel Ewanick recounted his 2 year stint as GM’s Chief  Marketing Officer.  What is odd is that Ewanick said he never felt secure at GM, stating mentors told him that “When you go there, you are going to get fired.”  He went on to say that he rented a house instead of buying, and that after GM regained it’s financial footing after the 2009 bankruptcy filing, it’s mantra for change quickly faded.  This, after he brokered a $559 million sponsorship deal with Manchester United and tried to spread the cost among different marketing units.

While we may never know the true intention GM had behind sacking Mr. Ewanick, he does stand behind his Manchester United deal, saying GM signed off on it the day he was fired.  We can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Mr. Ewanick had stayed on at Hyundai, or extended his Oddimotive tenure at Nissan a bit longer.   Odder still, his current (?) title as interim Chief Commercial Officer at Fisker.
