It’s not secret that we are fans of MN12 Cougar XR7s and T-Bird SCs here at Oddimotive, so why not get one related post out of the way early in 2015?
As a reminder, we love these because they are underrated by enthusiasts. The supercharged 3.8L V6 put out 210 to 230 HP, depending on the year. That doesn’t seem like much today, but the 315 to 330 lb-ft of torque is still nothing at which to sneeze. Add in the complete lack of reasonably affordable, personal “pseudo-luxury” coupes in the new car market today and you have a true Oddimobile, especially in orphaned brand (Mercury) format.
This example has a claimed 6,674 original miles, so must be among the lowest-mileage examples around. The seller certainly thinks so, based on a VERY high price. These usually trade under $5K, even with low mileage for the age. Further, the very rare 5-speed versions get much more interest. So, pricing is way out of line here, even though the car may be excellent. After this auction ends unsold, I hope the seller will re-list with a lower start and a reserve so that we can find out what the market things this is worth.
My last nit to pick here is with the ad itself. I’m sure all of our readers have seen eBay ads from dealer with specialty vehicles and very high prices. This price matches those, but the ad does not. If this is the best XR7 around, the seller should provide more than four pictures!

These have a clean, understated look. Monochrome grill is part of the XR7 trim, along with nice 16-inch wheels (large diameter at the time!).
The car does appear straight. Too bad about the pinstriping.
Mileage reads low. Note that boost/vacuum gauge unique to the SC and XR7. This is the only interior image.
