Mullet on Wheels: 1992 Chevy Astro Pickup Conversion in Teal!

The Astro and Safari Twins represented GM’s initial entry into the minivan segment, but featured body-on-frame construction and a rear-wheel drive configuration, vs. the unibody, front-wheel drive minivans that would eventually dominate the market. While this breed may not have lived on, these did offer truck-like payload and towing capacity and thus were popular with contractors. With that capability, why not make one into a pickup?  Well, someone did…

While the very 90s teal paint looks really good from afar, the seller states that it needs some work and that the rear and rear side windows should be replaced. He also included detailed shots of the paint issues and claims the car runs great with recent tune-up parts and fuel pump replacement.

Do you need to haul some oddly-sized items while flaunting your early 1990s, “end of the hair band era” style or do you simply love teal? If you answer yes to either, you might just need this beauty. After all, this has a bit of mullet appeal, with the family (or plumber?) van look in front combined with the keg hauler look in back.

The rear features barn-style doors, in case you were wondering. We imagine these are the originals chopped down and still using the original lower hinges.

Here’s a closeup of those doors.

Front the front, this is all family van.

Interior is stock from this angle and appears to be in good shape.

This truck does still have a rear seat; but, needless to say, has been reconfigured. We’re not sure how much legroom this offers, but it might be okay for the kids. Belts are, thankfully, present.

I like it. Wish it was the AWD variety. I think it’s worth about $3-$4K, not $6k.
